Luke 12:18-20

"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.' But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'"

Once upon a time there was a young couple who were on fire for the Lord. They read their Bible, prayed, attended church and even were a part of a couple’s Bible study group.

They visited friends who had larger homes with many up-graded features. The more they visited these homes, the more discontented they were with their own home. They began searching for a new home that would be just right for them. They spent days—even weeks trying to find just the right house in their price range and with all of the features they desired.

The husband was full of emotion as he gazed around his new home and proudly proclaimed to his wife: “This just what we have been looking for! We will live in this house forever!”

Over the following months, the house grew more important than just about anything in their life. They stopped their prayer life, Bible study and church attendance. Conflicts erupted between them and their marriage suffered.

What was the cause of it all? Was it the house? The answer is to be found in today’s Scripture. The man in Jesus’ parable was focused on the things of this world as if they would last forever—they don’t!

What a tragedy that some people spend their entire life striving for things that are temporary and have little or no eternal value. The chorus in an old hymn gives us the proper perspective on what is temporal and what is eternal: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus; look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!
