God's Truth!
Christian Devotional by Pastor Cecil Thompson

Pastor
Cecil Thompson

Genesis 3:1,4-5

"Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, 'Has God indeed said, [You shall not eat of every tree of the garden]?' Then the serpent said to the woman, 'You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.'"

We have not traveled very far from our roots of sin have we? Someone has noted that Satan has used the same foul methods to entice mankind to sin, throughout the ages of human history. Think about it, since his methods work so well there is no reason to change them.

What is there in the original temptation to sin, that has generated so much attraction across the millennia? I think it goes back to Satan's own sin---that of wanting to be equal with God. One of our greatest danger zones is PRIDE! To be preoccupied with self to the exclusion of others or the worship of God.

Many times as I have reflected upon the goodness of God, I have often wondered what part answered prayer plays in my spiritual emotions. I wonder if I would be sitting here typing with the same resolve, if I was given some devastating news?

Would I accuse God of not protecting me from Satan's attack? Satan loves it when we question God, accuse God, blame God or act as if we knew more than God. This is the front line of our spiritual warfare! Just because we win one battle with the enemy does not imply that we have won the war.

It is so revealing to listen to the conversations of those who are educated in man's learning, but who have failed to grasp the true knowledge which comes down from above. They impart the air of confidence, even when they are speaking words based upon half-truths.

I just heard an explanation of the spelling of the Hebrew word for truth. It begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, then the middle of the alphabet and finally the last letter of the alphabet. God's pure truth is the same yesterday, today and forever. Wow!

There it is! But half-truths is where Satan excels. There is just enough truth to make it seem to be accurate, but false enough to condemn us to an eternity without God.

Notice in today's Scripture how Satan twists the truth. He begins by asking an incredulous question, "Did God really say, - - ?" You can almost feel the wicked intimation that God is not fair in His dealings with His created beings and cannot be trusted.

Now it is very true that we do not understand all of the things God does or why He does them, but one thing that we can be assured of is that the Merciful Judge of all the universe will do what is right. We can rest in Him and only need to act in obedience to Him. It will be for our good and His glory.

The other thing that Satan delights in doing is to reinterpret God's Word and His reasons for our obedience. Consider his interpretation of God's intentions toward Adam and Eve; "God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." As we saw after the fall, the eyes of Adam and Eve were opened. As a matter of fact they did know good and evil---but they were not like God!

It is very important that we examine ourselves. Are the things we believe in and act upon based totally on the Word of God---or are they formed by the traditions of men?

We are told to search God's Word with diligence. Luke records in Luke 17:11, about the people of Berea. "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."

We have victory over the temptations of Satan by testing the words of men with the Word of God. When we do so, we will discover GOD'S TRUTH!

Blessings dear hearts. Walk with God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing.
