Orderly Account!
Christian Devotional by Pastor Cecil Thompson

Pastor
Cecil Thompson

Luke 1:1-3

"Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed."

I stand in absolute amazement of my dear wife, Joyce. She is one of those rare creatures who has the ability to bring order out of chaos. At times I feel like that little comic strip character with the dust cloud rising from him who seems to generate clutter everywhere he goes. (Don't laugh too hard. I have seen some of your homes, and let's not even talk about your cars).

Over the years, Joyce has tactfully brought me little baskets or boxes, each one becoming larger than the time before, to place all of my precious "stuff" in. Each time I want to laugh, but do not do so for fear for my life. (She really is not dangerous, but why tempt fate?).

After she delivers these devices designed to end all clutter, I'm given the task of finding storage places for my organizers. I think they call it, "Organizing the organizers." Oh wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this endless clutter! I think you get the picture, so I will move on to the intent of today's message.

The word "order" is found over 60 times in the Bible. It carries the meaning of organization and completeness. It is the opposite of careless indifference. In Isaiah 38, Isaiah tells King Hezekiah that God has spoken, and he is to get his house in order for he is going to die. That means getting everything squared away that you are putting off doing.

When I look at the things that accumulate around my chair and around my desk, I ask myself, "Why am I keeping them?" The answer is that I seem to think that they have some value, but after a period of time, I can't think for the life of me what value they ever had. I guess it is a matter of priorities. That is the essence of what I am sharing. What is the important thing in your life? If you knew that you had one day to live, what would you do and how would you act?

The fact of the matter is that the clutter in our life is not always things. Clutter is often habits, unconfessed sins, unfulfilled restitution, unsent words of appreciation, failing to share the gospel message with someone the Lord has laid upon our heart---it could go on and on, but you know what it is in your life.

I know one thing for certain---the material things of life have no value when we are face to face with eternity. We slave and strain and amass things galore that become clutter with no value in eternity. Our business activity, that is so frantic that it shuts out family and friends, is clutter in view of eternity. That goes for us preachers or religious workers as well. We often make our ministry an obsession to exclusion of the things that God would rather have in our life.

Serious house cleaning is in order for all of us. We need to make a careful inventory of our life in light of God's Word. In Matthew 6:33 it says; "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." That is the spiritual bath we need to take. By continually making Christ our highest priority we are "seeking His kingdom and His righteousness."

We should go to Him in prayer and humbly ask for guidance in bringing order out of the confusion we have created. He will delight in making Himself known to you and removing all the confusion, clutter and chaos from your life and giving you His peace. Wow! What a promise!

Blessings dear hearts. Walk with God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing.
